“Ye bin snoozin' o’ long time.”

“As long as I didn’t miss a meal, eh, Tic?” Lyl replied laughing.

“Ye did miss luncheon, actually, but ye be up in time fer dinner. Yetm is just over yonder there.”

Lyl looked up past the seat board and saw a little cluster of huts. It looked smaller than even the mining village, and that had been smaller than Timble. The hovels were made out of boulders and tiles. Smoke rose from each of the two chimneys on each one, and there were short little fences made out of woven dried brush holding tiny goats and shaggy sheep.

Children were running after huge scruffy dogs, and women were gathering the last vegetables of the day from simple gardens surrounded by more fences. Men were walking down from the mountain, some with game over their shoulders, one with a recovered sheep instead. There wasn’t a single horse or cow that she could see, nor a field. Much different than the farming town she had grown up in.

“There be Mina! She’s got da boy on ‘er back!” Alese shouted clapping her hands and looking like she was thinking of jumping out of the moving cart to run to them.

“Oi! I see, Sister!” Tic cried while she started waving her arm at them.

They were right. Mina was pulling some sort of potatoes from her little six rowed garden with a wicker carrier on her back holding her brother. He was bigger, and he had hair. His hair was the same color as Ties's. He looked even more like Ties with months of age on him. Lyl wiped her tears away quickly before anyone could notice she had cried them.

Mina saw the twins whooping and calling from the cart. She dropped the potatoes from her apron and ran to meet them, grinning and calling back greetings. Lyl ducked down. She really didn’t know what she came for, now that she was here.

The cart stopped, and the women climbed down while passing hugs and admiring her brother and complementing Mina. Lyl couldn’t stand it. She shouldn’t have come. She started sliding out of the back of the cart, hoping the women would keep forgetting she was there long enough for her to escape, when she saw Tamrock standing behind it, staring at her.

She couldn’t read his expression. He looked scared and relieved and hurt all at once. He just stood there, and she lay there, half out of the cart while the women all chit chatted. It seemed like they were like that for hours before Alese called for her.

“Little Andri Entha Girl! Where be ye? Oh, I see ye found our Tammie!”

And then it was his turn to be slammed with hugs and kisses and fondling of his hair and comments on his smelling like goats. He took it all well, grinning and pretending Lyl wasn’t stepping down and trying to figure out if she still could run. He was acting for their sakes, but Lyl could feel his glances in her direction, and they held her firmly in place.
